your song today: Sweet Emotion – Aerosmith

Classic. This has to be one of my all-time most favourite of all favourite songs. As I’ve said numerous times, Dazed & Confuzed is much loved in my life, and this song graced the title sequence like no other song could have done. I am a huge Aerosmith fan – I even based my honours thesis on them. I have great respect for them as a band, and Steven Tyler has always been one of the best vocalists and musicians in history. He really lives music and loves it with such a passion that it’s completely inspirational. I am excited to hear their new stuff!

and just because ya gotta love two of your favourite bands playing together

your song today: Superstition – Stevie Wonder

This has got to be the funkiest song on the planet! I first met this song when I watched Stealing Beauty, one of my favourite films, and it has been used in many great films here and there. It rarely gets the recognition it deserves though, but play it at ANY party – and you’re sure to have people shuffling their feet. Suave, swag and super sweet – this is an evergreen song if there ever was one.

your song today: Woman Tonight – America

I love this song so much! It takes me straight back to the 70s – even though I was only born in ’81 ha! My dad was a fan of America, and when I was growing up I absolutely hated the typical 70s sound that they had (also couldn’t stand Fleetwood Mac, but love them now too). Now I can appreciate their music, and I just love their stuff – especially for the 70s sound. I’ve always loved their album covers though! If you don’t know America, also check out Sandman, Sister Golden Hair, Ventura Highway and the famous Horse With No Name.

I think Tony Olsen from Dazed & Confuzed was based on Gerry Beckley (lead vocals) – check out the live version of Woman Tonight and then compare with the movie clip.

Yes I know I’ve posted a clip from the movie before – who cares? I Love It!

your song today: Big Love – Lindsey Buckingham

Today is a good day to remind you of a really great song’s alter ego: it’s other version! Sometimes a live version is just really better than the studio one. I mean everyone will always love the original version, but I love hearing the passion of a live performance and it’s great to be reminded that the song was in fact an original work of art – that belongs to the artist – to do with whatever they want. Music is inherently only really real when it’s is played by the musician. It’s great that we are able to listen to their music as they intended it as a recorded song – but it’s even better to see it being ‘lived’ by the player. So today I’ll play you my favourite example. I mean, you all know how nice Hotel California‘s (The Eagles) live version is vs the studio one. Many people prefer that version and don’t even really know the original song that well. So what probably started as a cool twist for a live concert became so well loved that they start playing it like that all the time. Your song today takes this a little further, what a special song…

This reworked Fleetwood Mac song by Lindsey Buckingham is just incredible. In fact, I can be wrong but I think this was actually how Lindsey originally intended the song to sound. He left the band right after they recorded it and played it like this throughout his solo career – then when the band got back together for The Dance they recorded this version. The fire with which he plays is really something. Enjoy!

From the album Tango In The Night:

Lindsey’s version: (2011 – sorry the ad’s are so in the way! but the best version that I could find…)

Wish I was there to see this!

your song today: Losin’ Your Mind – Pride & Glory

I think Zakk Wylde is probably better known for his bullseye custom Gibsons than he really is for his earlier music. Pride & Glory was his first solo band (after playing for Ozzy in the early years and before forming Black Label Society) – and I got to know it in high school through my friends Herman and Hannes. Hannes (who was my sister’s boyfriend at the time and the catalyst for my love of music) picked this up when they were staying in America. I still think this is one of the best intros to a song ever, and although the song drags on a bit to the end obviously has great Zakk-fueled solos.

I have a thing for cool songs that somehow get lost in translation, so I’m including this one as your song so y’all can remember it! Enjoy!
