Sweet Nothins – Brenda Lee

Little Miss Dynamite’s sweet song, with some pretty pictures of pin ups for your viewing pleasure. This is legendary rockabilly stuff right here.

Enjoy the weekend!

Oh Marie – Louis Prima

One of the funnest songs to dance to ever, today I post a little tribute to one of my favourite artists, Louis Prima. What a legend. Ah to have been able to see these live!

I also include the famous Jungle Book song, just because it’s one of the best moments in animation, even though King Louis wasn’t even in the original Kipling masterpiece. Louis Prima did such an incredible job, that the character became a much-loved aspect of the story, and besides, I used to laugh myself to death watching this as a kid!

Soul Bossa Nova – Quincy Jones

It goes without saying, that a man who composes a song like this in under 20 minutes has to be a legend – and what a legend he is. There have been few musicians with influence, repertoire and history that compares to that of Quincy ‘Delight’ Jones. I absolutely love this song, as I am a huge fan of old 60s jazzy stuff. It was written in 1962, but became popular again when Austin Powers hit the big screen back in 1997… I include the intro from International Man Of Mystery for a blast from the past. I was never a huge fan of the films, but they had a few hilarious moments and I loved the 60s vibes.

Yeah baby!

Fortunate Son – Creedence Clearwater Revival

If there is one band that I would have to say I grew up with, it would be CCR, and I have been in numerous rows because I keep standing up for this obviously cool band. I love Southern Rock, but these guys play everything with such effortless charm that you just can’t help loving it. No wonder Bad Moon Rising is just one of those overplayed drunken bar songs. People don’t even know who it is, but when they hear it, happiness abounds without fail. This has got to be one of my favourite songs of theirs, it just conveys that late 60s milieu in an instant. So cool. I won’t go into any of the political or war stuff about the song, I just love it because, thanks to Forrest Gump, I can’t listen to this song without seeing a Huey – and also, every time I see the Huey that flies past my house every day, I hear this tune in my head. Great partners.

Strict Machine – Goldfrapp

Some yummy stuff for a Friday. This was sort of an anthem for my friend and I some years ago. We used to play this song when we got all dolled up for a night about town. Dancing while we did our make-up and so forth. I miss her to bits and wish every day that we can have just one more night of the kind of fun that only we could have together.

Return Of Django – The Upsetters

Damn I just love this song! I swear I can listen to it all day long and never tire of it. Reggae has a very special place in my heart and Lee Perry is one of the stars of this genre. The cover that Asian Dub Foundation did for The Beach is also great. I love that entire soundtrack.

Enjoy!

Drive – R.E.M.

This song immediately transports me to my high school years. My dad bought the CD and we always listened it to death when we used to visit him where he worked. It was such an amazing escape always, and all the music that we listened to there brings back the kind of ethereal vibe that we always experienced when we were there. It is also a real winter song, which makes it very ironic in the feelings it conveys to me. I was never a huge fan even though some of their songs are some of my favourites, but I sort of miss R.E.M. – they were somewhat groundbreaking in their craft and very iconic of the 90s, and Michael Stipe is such an interesting individual – wonder what they’re up to these days. Also, the video brings back memories of all the crowd surfing we used to do back in the day – round about the same time. Good, young times they were indeed.

Sensitive Kind – J.J. Cale

The man says it just right in this song.
Just remember, we might be sensitive, but we can be damn strong too.

These Boots Are Made For Walking – Nancy Sinatra

Very appropriate for today.

I just found me a brand new box of matches…

Hey! Baby – Bruce Channel & Delbert McClinton

I will never tire of this song. Not much to say – the videos pretty much says it all.
But I will say this: I can’t listen to this song without the biggest urge to get up and boogie. Also, I can’t watch that Dirty Dancing clip without the biggest smile in the world.
